  • What firmnesses of sleep sets are generally available?

There are three general types of standard construction mattresses available.

  1. Firm - a mattress that has a "firm" combination of padding on top of the springs that gives the top of the mattress a stiffer feel.
  2. Plush - a mattress that has a "soft" combination of padding on the top of the springs that gives the top of the mattress a softer feel.
  3. Pillowtop - a mattress that has a "soft" combination of padding on top of the springs, but the top several layers are sewn separately to a pillow (generally 1 - 4 inches thick), then sewn on top of the spring system.

Some manufacturers produce the same model of bed with the same innerspring unit, box spring(s) and supportive capacity, but designate them as "firm", "plush", or "pillowtop". But the cushioning materials overlaying the unit are progressively more in number, are thicker or varying in composition and cost. These cushioning layers are what give the bed its "feel". This is typically referred to as the comfort aspect and is a personal somewhat subjective choice that is typically influenced by whether you sleep on your side, or your back. Most doctors do not recommend sleeping on your stomach, as it induces an unnatural arch in the spine that can leave you with a chronic low grade backache.
